ACTION 1

Survey of current methods for the compliance to the REACH legislation

Action 1 made a survey of the current common methods (also using animals) to evaluate their practical availability (presence of laboratories), cost, number of animals, etc. This serves to identify higher requirements for the alternative methods.

Federchimica launched numerous contacts and investigations on public and private laboratory structures in Italy. Most of the laboratories which decided to collaborate offer physico-chemical testing, 7 laboratories offer toxicological and/or ecotoxicological testing. 1 well known GLP certified European laboratory also collaborated in the project. 12 Italian laboratories have GLP certification.

5 Italian companies can offer tests for at least 50% of Reach tox endpoints, 4 of them are able to conduct equal/more than 50% of Reach ecotox endpoint testing. Some laboratory with in vitro/alternative testing capability has also been found.

The non-Italian laboratory covers more than 90% of all requirements, the best Italian laboratory has similar capabilities.

Federchimica will continue the monitoring of the Italian laboratory situation for Reach testing in order to update the situation when companies will get GLP certification for tox and ecotox testing activities which is the key to get studies accepted under Reach Regulation. It is expected that the registration deadline 2013 will involve more substances which need new studies compared to the 2010 registrations where much data was/is already available.
